Bret Victor’s Magic Ink is, by far, the best thing I’ve read online in quite a while (it’s been up since 2006, so you may have already seen it, but it’s new to me). It makes the point that interaction is overrated for many applications, that they should instead simply present their data in an inferred manner for the task the user wishes to perform. It then shows examples of this idea for Amazon and Yahoo Movies, and presents an in-depth case study of a BART widget and how the same principles can be applied to an airline’s website. He then raises questions and offers answers for how these kind of interfaces can be developed going forward. It’s long and deep, and I admit that I didn’t read every word, but it’s laid out in such a way that you feel you don’t have to, that you can scan for the main points and backfill for the details that you’re interested in. Absolutely top rate.
