Another month, another day spent hunting for new music:

Crystal Castles – Crystal Castles
Coke-and-expensive-sad-hooker-on-her-night-off techno for sweaty hipsters in dark red-lit clubs. I feel like a tourist listening to it, but it’s solid.

Ratatat – LP3
Via recommendation. They’re a little hard to classify. LP3 carries elements of hip-hop, funk, latin, folk, rock, dub, and more all in a nice little instrumental electronica basket. Whatever, it’s pretty fantastic.

Deerhoof – Friend Opportunity
Another recommendation. Their new album is on iTunes ahead of the official release on Tuesday, but I have no desire to pay for .aac anymore, so Friend Opportunity it is. This album hits a nice sweet spot with soundscapes of warm brassy crashing guitars, post-rock that finds its way around without wandering off too often.

Guster – Ganging Up On the Sun
Yet another recommendation. I’ve been dragging my feet a little in picking them up, but a reminder tweeted up today that finally got me moving. This album is a great set of finely-crafted pop-rock, I’m sorry I waited so long.

The Books – The Lemon of Pink
They aren’t a main attraction, but they are a quality denouement, soft and inspiring of gentle introspection. If you aren’t annoyed by vocal sampling, they’re worth checking out.

Basia Bulat – Oh, My Darling
I love this. I almost didn’t list it here, it would be a great secret weapon to pull out for special mixes.

Basia rocks! I was just listening to her this afternoon. But the Canadian Mafia is going to come find you now for revealing our secret artists. (Hopefully they won’t deploy Burrito Justice.)

Try Kathleen Edwards, Asking For Flowers.

Are you happy with eMusic?

It’s too bad that “The Cheapest Key” video shows up on google, it has way too much of a mainstream country sounds for me. A quick run through the rest of the album sounds great, though. Thanks for the pointer.

I like paying for music, and I like more indie-type stuff, so eMusic is a good fit for me for now. Their site and software kind of suck compared to Amazon, but nothing too horrible.
